Rabbit Neutering In Leicester
What is Rabbit Neutering?
Rabbit neutering is a surgical procedure that involves removing the reproductive organs of your rabbit to prevent them from reproducing.
For male rabbits, this means removing the testes (orchidectomy), while for female rabbits, it involves removing the uterus and ovaries (spaying).
Neutering is a common and responsible practice that helps prevent unwanted litters, but it also has several health and behavioral benefits.
What are the Benefits of Neutering my Rabbit?
Rabbit neutering, also known as spaying or castrating, offers a multitude of benefits for both rabbits and pet-owners:
- Prevents unwanted litter and overpopulation.
- Reduces aggressive behaviour in Male rabbits.
- Spaying female rabbits prevents uterine cancer and other reproductive health issues.
- Helps prevent testicular cancer and prostate cancer in Male rabbits.
- Expands rabbits' lifespans. With reduced risk of disease, they can live longer.
- Neutering encourages rabbits to bond and form better relationships with each other and your family members.

How Does Rabbit Neutering Work?
Prior to your rabbit neutering Leicester appointment, you will be asked to fill out a consent form and run through what is needed to prepare your pet. We ask you to bring them in a secure box or basket to their appointment and something like a blanket that smells of home. We advise rabbits to be brought in along with their companions to reduce their stress levels of separation. Bring along their food, as we encourage them to eat as soon as they wake from anaesthesia.
Our experienced vets regularly complete the neutering procedure, so you can have peace of mind knowing your pets are in good hands! Your rabbit will require an anaesthetic for the procedure, but rest assured they will be closely monitored throughout the surgery and during their recovery.
Once the procedure is complete, your rabbit will remain with us for the rest of the day until we’re happy with either recovery. A member of our team will talk you through aftercare and using their pain medication when you take them home. If you are ever worried about your rabbit’s health after rabbit neutering, give us a call and we’re happy to offer advice.
When Should I Neuter my Rabbit?
Rabbits are typically neutered around 4 months of age. If you’re a breeder then having your rabbits neutered before they find their home is ideal and it’s a safer procedure the earlier it’s done.
Are There Any Risk Involved?
The risk of complications during anaesthesia is influenced by factors such as the age of the pet, specific breeds, and any existing underlying health issues. To ensure your pet's comfort and safety, they will be given premedication to help them relax, as well as two types of pain relief. You can trust that the Woodward's team will be by your pet's side throughout the entire process, providing attentive care and support.
