Puppy Microchipping at Woodward Vets

What is Puppy Microchipping?

A chip the size of a rice grain is implanted under the skin of your puppy’s scruff as part of a permanent ID system. The majority of veterinarians, including our Woodward Veterinary practice, local governments, and rescue organisations have access to a portable scanner that can read the unique number on each microchip, ensuring that your contact information can be quickly obtained from the main microchipping database. A quick phone call can reunite you with your puppy after they have been microchipped and checked.

Whose Responsibility Is It to Microchip My Puppy?

The dog breeder is responsible for ensuring that puppies are microchipped before their sale. It is imperative to note that puppies cannot be sold until they reach the age of eight weeks, and microchipping is a prerequisite for the purchase. In addition, breeders are required to register their information in a database, and this information will be linked to the microchip throughout the dog's life. The designation of a 'breeder' applies to anyone who owns a dog that gives birth, irrespective of whether they are engaged in a dog breeding business. For prospective puppy buyers, it is crucial to verify that the puppy has been microchipped before bringing them home.

If you are adopting a dog from a shelter, then updating their microchips will be necessary so that their new address details are on the database and their microchip is efficient and protecting them.

Fines Issued for Pets Not Being Microchipped

All of the staff at Woodward Veterinary Practice strongly recommends microchipping for all animals. All puppies must now be immunised by the time they are 8 weeks old in order to transfer ownership from the breeder. If your dog is not microchipped, you may be subject to a fine of up to £500. It's important to remember that your pet needs to be microchipped and have a pet passport if you intend to take them overseas.

The Benefits of Microchipping

Puppy microchipping is an important step in ensuring their safety and well-being for the rest of their lives. Microchipping provides a permanent form of identification for puppies. Unlike collars or tags, which can fall off or be removed, a microchip is a small electronic chip that is implanted under the skin of the puppy. This chip contains a unique identification number that can be read by a scanner.

Reunification

If a puppy gets lost or stolen, a microchip greatly increases the chances of being reunited with their owner. Our veterinary clinic has scanners that can read the microchip and identify the owner's contact information.

Permanent Identification

Unlike collars and tags that can be lost or removed, microchips offer a permanent form of identification. This ensures that your puppy can be identified even if traditional forms of identification are absent.

Peace of Mind

Having your dogs Microchipped at Woodward Veterinary Practice, will give you peace of mind knowing that your puppy has a permanent form of identification. This can be especially important for puppies who have a tendency to wander off.

Deterrence of Theft

The presence of a microchip can act as a deterrent to potential pet thieves. If stolen, a microchipped dog may be more challenging to sell, as their true ownership can be easily verified.

Access to Medical Records

Some microchips allow for the storage of medical information. This can be beneficial in emergencies, enabling quick access to your puppy's health records.

You will be required to fill out a registration form at the time of implant, and a member of the Woodward Veterinary practice team will then submit your information to a national database from that form. Your information is stored in the database for the duration of your pet's life, and the cost of doing so is bundled into the price of implantation.

Any changes to your contact information should be updated as soon as possible. All of the microchips used in the Pet Passport programme at Woodward Veterinary Practice are compliant with the International Standard (ISO) and may, therefore, be recognised by scanners abroad.
