Spaying Kittens
Kitten Spaying is a service we offer at Woodward Veterinary Centre. We adhere to the RSPCA and Cats Protection recommendations, which suggest neutering both female and male kittens at roughly four months of age. Kittens achieve reproductive maturity quickly. A female cat's ovaries and uterus are removed during spaying. A male cat's testicles are removed during castration.

What is Kitten Spaying
Kitten spaying, ovariohysterectomy, or neutering, is a surgical procedure in which a veterinarian removes a female kitten's ovaries and uterus to prevent her from reproducing. Here are some important things to know about kitten spaying…Spaying your kitten has several benefits. It prevents unwanted litters of kittens and reduces the risk of certain health problems, such as uterine infections and some types of cancer.
Recommended Age of Kitten Spaying
Most veterinarians recommend spaying kittens between 4-6 months of age. This is before they reach sexual maturity, which can occur as early as 5 months old. Spaying before the first heat cycle is ideal, as it reduces the risk of certain health problems and also prevents the onset of sexual behaviours, such as yowling and spraying.
Preparing Your Kitten
Please transport your kitten in a safe carrier with a cosy blanket from home. To learn how to prepare for bringing your kitten on a trip to Woodwood vets, click here. As cats are territorial animals who like to remain in familiar surroundings, Woodward Veterinary Practice has everything in place to make your kitten's visit as stressless as possible. We are proud to have earned the ISFM Gold accreditation.
Kitten Spaying Procedure
Kitten spaying is a routine surgical procedure at Woodward Veterinary Practice that is typically performed under general anaesthesia. Our highly skilled veterinarian makes a small incision in the kitten's abdomen and removes the ovaries and uterus. The procedure usually takes less than an hour, but your kittens will spend the day with us so we can keep checking on them.
We will go over the procedure and the consent paperwork when you are admitted. Please be aware that the registered owner (who is above 18) or an authorised agent must sign the consent form. Your kitten will be admitted as a "day patient," and after our staff is satisfied with how your pet has recovered, they will be released later that day. The staff will go over all the information you need to know about caring for your kitten after surgery and after taking pain medication during your pet's discharge appointment.
Kittens Recovery After Procedure
Kittens will need to rest for a few days after the spay surgery. We may prescribe pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. It's important to keep the incision site clean and dry, and to prevent the kitten from licking or scratching at the area. Most kittens will recover fully within a week or two.
