Parasite Prevention with Flea Treatment

Ensuring the long-term health and happiness of both your pet and your family requires consistent use of proven preventive measures against the most common parasites throughout your pet's life. It's crucial to understand that prevention is not only easier but also more cost-effective than seeking a cure later on.

Fleas stand out as a primary cause of skin issues in dogs and cats. Some pets can develop an allergic reaction to flea saliva, requiring only a few bites to trigger a severe skin reaction. Fleas are also carriers of the common flea tapeworm and, in severe cases, can lead to anaemia. While pet fleas may bite humans, they cannot sustain themselves on human hosts.

To determine the appropriate level of flea treatment for your dog, we will collaborate with you to conduct a risk assessment based on your pet's lifestyle and behaviour.

How Regularly Should Your Dog Receive Flea Treatment?

Once every month, you should treat your pet for fleas, and every two to three months, or even more frequently, for worms. Depending on your pet's lifestyle, talk to your vet about the best course of action.

The flea treatment products you use should be recommended by our vets and suited to your dog’s breed, size and weight. Spot-on treatments are easily applied, they go directly onto the skin at the back of your dog’s neck where they can’t reach the flea treatment. The flea treatments we advise kill existing fleas quickly and protect your dog for 4 weeks.

I you are worried about fleas in the home, then keeping areas your pet sleeps in clean is important. Washing their bedding on a hit cycle and vacuuming the area can do the trick. Using pet-safe insecticides on furniture should kill fleas and eggs in the home, but we don’t recommend using this near your dog’s bedding.

Signs Your Dog Already Has Fleas

  • Frequent scratching or intense irritation
  • Tiny black specs of flea dirt in the pet’s fur or found in their bedding
  • Small spots or scabs on the skin
  • Areas of skin irritation or hair loss
